Navigation on the Forth & Clyde Canal will be suspended between locks 3 & 16 from mid-November 2024 until March 2026, as outlined in the Scottish Canals message below and the attached Frequently Asked Questions. Please alert any of your members who may have been planning to use the canal in the next 18-months.

Message from Scottish Canals

Thank you for your patience regarding the suspension of boat movements between locks 3 and 16 on the Forth & Clyde Canal. Our engineers have now completed a comprehensive assessment of the Falkirk flight and we are now finalising a programme of works prioritising works across locks 3 to 16. This will see significant investment in the area. This major project will see us replace gates at locks 7,9,11, 14 and 16, and undertake further improvements to lock gates including cill replacement, quoin repair and over-planking. To accommodate these works we require to suspend navigation from mid-November 2024 until March 2026. We understand the significant impact this will have on some mooring customers, licence holders and boaters, and that you may wish to relocate for the duration of works. To help with this we have compiled a list of FAQ’s to help you understand what these works may mean for you. Please take a few minutes to read these to help inform your next steps.

If you would like to relocate or to discuss this option further, please contact our moorings team by e-mail (moorings@scottishcanals.co.uk).

The window for essential boat movements, for those wishing to move through locks 3-16, prior to the works starting, will be open from now until mid-November. The boat movements team will be able to support you in booking your transit. Please call 07810 794 467 or email

lowland.canals@scottishcanals.co.uk to make arrangements.

We will be providing further details on these works at the Lowlands Customer Meeting this Saturday (26th October) at The Falkirk Wheel from 10am to 12 noon. Further information will be available on our website to keep you informed throughout the programme.

We apologise for the disruption caused and thank you in advance for bearing with us through these major works.
